SPORTS, LEISURE AND RECREATION IN THE USA & SPAIN

- Certificate of Achievement: Students need to pass their evaluation to obtain this certificate, it will be delivered after receiving final grades before the end of October 2020

This course, completely taught in English, focuses on the recreation, sports and leisure industry in the United States and Spain. Students will experience first hand the richness of Spanish culture. Classes will be dynamic and all students will need to interact and work together in small groups. Several outdoor activities are organized as part of the program such as guided visits to festivals, leisure and recreation centers, etc. Students from Illinois and Alicante and other European countries will participate in this international program. Classes are taught by American and Spanish professors in English. Pre-requisites- Intermediate Level of English.

A.  Sports, Leisure and Recreation in Spain

OBJECTIVES:

Students will learn about the sports, leisure and recreation activities in Spain with special mention to the public sector, people with disabilities and health promotion.  

 

CONTENT:

This will include classroom activities, and practical sessions and field trips. The classroom activities will provide an understanding of the structure of the sports, leisure and recreation field in Spain with special attention to the public sector, sports and recreation leadership and professional opportunities in the field in Spain.

o   Structure and organization of the sports, leisure and recreation field in Spain
o   The provision of sports, leisure and recreation opportunities in the public sector in the Spain
o   The provision of sports, leisure and recreation opportunities for people with disabilities in Spain
o   Physical activity and recreation across the lifespan in Spain. The relationship between recreation and health.        

 

B. Sports, leisure and Recreation in the United States

OBJECTIVES:

Students will learn about sports, leisure and recreation in the United States and about their challenging and competitive culture which encourages people to go ‘above and beyond’.  

 

CONTENT:

Classroom activities:

o   Structure and organization of the sports, leisure and recreation field in the United States

o   The provision of sports, leisure and recreation opportunities in the public sector in the United States  

o   The provision of sports, leisure and recreation opportunities for people with disabilities in the United States  

o   Physical activity and recreation across the lifespan in the United States. The relationship between recreation and health.  

o   Professional career opportunities in the United States.

Evaluation

 Students are required to attend all classes and outdoor activities. Besides, they will work in groups. Class participation and presentations will be included as part of the evaluation.
